All of the steps that I discuss in this guide will be using FedEx. FedEx currently has a really simple International Priority Flat Rate shipping service. This guide will NOT cover all your International Shipping needs but it will cover enough to get a small to medium shipment to the United State of America (USA). Shipping to USA is easy and simple. To calculate shipping cost you can use the FedEx Postage Price Calculator.
This guide is going to help those who are trying to ship items in bulk. You should first try and see if the item(s) you are trying to ship to the United States (US) are cheaper to ship via your counties government post office then compare it to the FedEx price. I will be going over a few different countries as examples below.
Shipping in bulk can reduce the per item cost of each item, making an international business selling in the United States profitable.
1. Lets say shipping 1 item to the US from your country costs $50 USD.
2. Then lets say that shipping 2 items, at the same time, to the US from your country costs you $60 USD.
3. That means that your per item cost is now $30 each instead of $50.
The more quantity you ship the lower your per item cost can be. There are other factors involved but this works as a general rule. So depending on the size and weight of your items, the per item cost can be lowered to a small fraction of the shipping cost of 1 item. Bigger companies take advantage of this shipping strategy when moving supply’s from manufacture to store locations.
1. Shipping to USA with Tracking
FedEx – The cost to ship to the US changes from country to country based on the weight and size of the package being sent. FedEx makes it a little easier by offer 2 different Box Size that are a Flat Shipping Cost to the US, there is the 10kg Box & a 25kg box. Flat Rate means it costs the same to ship an empty box as it does to ship a full box. In order to take advantage of the bulk saving strategy, you are going to want to fill it as much as possible. The 10kg box is cheaper than the 25kg box. I have included a sample of estimated shipping prices to the US from the following countries.
FedEx International Priority Flat Rate – 10kg Box (22lbs)
Box Size – 15.81″ x 12.94″ x 10.19″ (40.16 cm x 32.86 cm x 25.88 cm)
Weight when empty: 31 oz.
Estimated Postage Costs to USA (10kg box) from the county listed:
UK – 122.10
Canada – 181.71
Australia – 328.20
Philippines – 301.14
Hong Kong – 302.56
India – 207.31
Singapore – 328.20
China – 303.99
Japan – 358.86

FedEx International Priority Flat Rate – 25kg Box (55lbs)
Box Size – 21.56″ x 16.56″ x 13.19″ (54.8 cm x 42.1 cm x 33.5 cm)

Estimated Postage Costs to USA (25kg box) from the county listed:
UK – 221.69
Canada – 275.77
Australia – 533.41
Philippines – 446.91
Hong Kong – 449.01
India – 398.18
Singapore – 533.41
China – 520.92
Japan – 569.75
Mexico – 205.96
Shipping prices change all the time, so the above prices can be out of date as soon as I publish this article so make sure to do your own price checking.
Example – Shipping from UK in a 25kg Box:
$222 USD / 50 items per box = $4.44 USD cost per item.
Maximum Value – The maximum value of a package you can send via this method will vary depending on the county you are shipping from.
Delivery Time – Most delivery times are relatively fast, within 3 to 5 days but it can take longer depending on where you are shipping from.
Tracking – As far as I can tell, tracking is included on all shipments. Please let me know if this is not the case.
Insurance – Insurance is available on most shipments. The amount and what can be insured are dependent on the country shipping from and on what is being shipped.
Customs Form – FedEx will help you fill out all proper Customs Forms.
Custom Fees – FedEx will be able to give you an estimate on how much the Customs Fees will be. They will also give you the option to pay the fee before you ship the package. The final Customs Fees will be calculated by the Customs Agent when the package arrives to the United States, this fee may or may not be the same that FedEx quoted you.
HS Tariff Codes – You can find the HS Tariff Code through FedEx’s website.
Shipping Supplies – Both the 10kg & 25kg boxes can be found on the FedEx website and in their stores.
Restrictions and More – FedEx has restrictions on what they allow to be shipped using their services. In additions to FedEx restrictions, your origin country and the US also has their own restrictions. Please check all restrictions before mailing items.
Many things can go wrong, insurance is a good way of managing the risk of international shipping.
2. Who is Going to Process my Orders Once its in the US?
If you already have a buyer then you can ship it directly to them. But if you don’t have a buyer yet, then you can send your package to a Fulfillment Center?
Fulfillment Centers – The disadvantage in shipping your items in bulk is you will most likely not have your items sold just yet. You will have merchandise in the US that is waiting to be sold, so who is going to do that for you?
What is a Fulfillment Center? A fulfillment center is a company that offers solutions that included: providing a US address to ship to, storing your products and provide domestic shipping. They handle the logistics, all you have to do is get your package to them and then tell them who to mail it to.
Some shopping cart software are set up so that when a customer makes a purchase, the software send the customers shipping info directly to the Fulfillment Center.
Unless you are selling on Amazon, I don’t recommend that you use their Fulfillment Services (FBA). I use FBA and their customer service, for sellers, is terrible. My messages take a really long time to be answered and when they are, they don’t know what they are talking about. Non-Amazon Fulfillment Centers can be much more flexible and can be a much better fit for your needs.
3. What is the Cheapest Postage Cost to USA?
Tip – If you live in a country that has a high shipping charge, check the cost of the Flat Rate Boxes in a neighboring county. The cost in a near by country can be substantially cheaper.
Check FedEx for the cost using your exact weight to see if you can get a better deal than using a flat rate box. Check other postal carriers in your area, its very possible that they can give you better deal then FedEx.
If your going to be shipping to USA, make sure you get every discount. At the end of the year when I do my taxes, I go over all my fees and Shipping is the BIGGEST by far! Anything you can do to reduce those costs are mandatory in order to stay in business and stay competitive. There are online shipping services where you can buy shipping at discount rates. Companies like Stamps.com have special agreements with FedEx, DHL and UPS where you can get up to 20% off shipping costs.
